I think it's all to do with where your film is going to be shown and if you're gonna make any money from it. The entire world of rights and permission is a complete mind warp and you really need to get in touch with a copy-right lawyer if you want to be totally safe.

Even if you want to use mozart or bach or something of that type, be careful. Just because the music itself is not copyrighted, the performance all most certainly is. Just something to keep in mind.

Dunstablesucks is right, the world of copyright is a confusing one.So be carefull and get permission!!!!!!
Stabing Westward has an excellent sound that I have wanted to use myself(in fact I have just finished a screenplay based on "Save Yourself").Might I suggest some White Zombie,NIN or Filter.
Well I hope this helps.

A good idea is not to get too carried away with the idea of putting another artist's song in your movie. Instead, look into contacting local artists, or even easier, just go to mp3.com and listen to different artists of the same genre that you are interested, since most of those artists control thier own music (and not greedy record execs), you should be able to get permission. Keep in mind that most mainstream artists that belong to a record label wouldn't be able to give you thier direct permission since they don't own thier own work. If there are like one or two songs that you just HAVE to have.. then save up your money, cause you might have to do some spendin'.
